PRESS RELEASE
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) partnered with DeafNation to host the first-ever “Deaf Viewpoints: 2008 U.S. Presidential Election” debate, taped at the NAD headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Nancy J. Bloch, NAD chief executive officer, was asked by DeafNation to serve as neutral, nonpartisan moderator for the debate, which featured four individuals who gave their viewpoints about U.S. presidential candidates Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama. The NAD, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, does not endorse, support, or oppose any candidate for public office. Bloch presented questions and responses were provided by Robert Traina and Michael Clegg in favor of McCain, and by Jeff Rosen and Liz Stone in favor of Obama.
Discussion was lively and covered a wide range of topics that included captioning access to campaign ads and videos, enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act, hiring of deaf and hard of hearing people to work for the federal government, judicial balance within the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, affordable and accessible broadband services, and impact of the current economic and financial crisis.
Joel Barish, president of DeafNation, said “We are thrilled to be able to partner with the NAD to host this first-ever debate on U.S. presidential candidates from the perspective of deaf citizens.” Bloch added, “We at the NAD are pleased to work with DeafNation to bring about greater awareness of issues of national importance and encourage deaf and hard of hearing Americans to exercise their right to vote on Election Day.”
The NAD also has voter information on its website, www.nad.org/Vote2008.

Wish I could explain more about myself as being Republican. The 60 seconds clock for each rebuttal was pretty tough.
October 17th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
this was very very interesting! It is good to see everyones interests and concerns, it seems we all have many of the same! I was thrilled to receive this email.
October 18th, 2008 at 5:41 am
It was so remarkable! I want to thank all of you that you had been sharing your remarks about Obama and McCain as your viewpoints. I had difficult time to choose the right president of United States as voting. When I watched the video, It helps me to understand what Obama can do for Deaf American same as McCain. It benefits me to make the right decision to vote. Thank you again for the Debate of Deaf Viewpoints.
October 18th, 2008 at 8:02 am
An excellent debate! It raises a voter awareness that gains our attention and reminds everyone to vote. A vote is the first step to our lifelong commitment. Your vote CAN make such a difference!
October 18th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

mCCAIN IS WRONG ONE FOR THIS COUNTRY AT THIS TIME. wHAT IS WRONG WITH THOSE REPUBLICAN GUYS. i SUGGEST FOR THOSE TO CHECK UP THE FACTCHECK.COM AND MCCAIN VOTED FOR JANE FERNANDES WHEN HE WAS ON GALLAUDET BOARD OF TRUSTEES. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN DEAF PEOPLE WHO HAVE THAT ABILITIES LIKE JANE FERNANDES!!!
October 18th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

October 18th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Thank you for your excellent video on the Deaf Viewpoints. I enjoyed listening to your dicussion of your viewpoints. Thank you for your input. IT IS EXCELLENT.
October 18th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Hi Nancy dear,
Thank you for this great idea of having this debate on the video. 21st century technology! Wow! Even though I have made my decision, I must say the panelists did a very good job on their perceptions. I enjoyed this type of good quality videos, Thank you again.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:10 am
I went to McCain’s rally three times and they didn’t get interpters for DEAF VOTERS. I feel that
McCain thinks that DEAF VOTERS ARE stupid like duringMs.Fernandes’s protest rally.
I went to Obama’s rally and there was interpters for
the deaf votes.Mr. Obama signed little to the deaf voters. He showed lot efforts to sign to the deaf voters.
MC CAIN HAS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT KNOWING ASL CUZ HE WAS
ON THE GALLY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
October 19th, 2008 at 12:30 am
Wow, what a wonderful video for those 2008 presidental candidates. This does help me to make my decision who I vote for next month’s election. I really do appreciate listen more information on John McCain. I do agree on McCain’s side… Thank you!
October 19th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
It’s true that Obama plans to raise tax for small business people, but….
Read more in the article:
http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/15/smallbusiness/small_biz_taxes_factcheck.smb/index.htm?postversion=2008101714
Excerpt:
“That’s because the lion’s share of taxable income comes from a small number of wealthy businesses. Out of 34.7 million filers with business income on Schedules C, E or F, 479,000 filers fall into the top two brackets, according to an analysis of projected 2009 filings by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.
The other 34.3 million - or 98.6% - would be unaffected by Obama’s proposed rate hike.”
We know from an interview with McCain that he even doesn’t know how many houses (actually, villas) he owns, and he should be our president? His weakest area is economy; therefore, he is disqualified to become our next president.
October 19th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
This is an excellent video showing Deaf professionals’ viewpoint of the presidential candidates and their stand on many issues. This would be a perfect teaching tool in the schools for the deaf where government classes are taught.
Many deaf individuals I met in deaf-sponsored events tell me they did not need to vote in major elections because they did not understand the political process. Many have no idea what their rights are. Our government needs a new face in the White House; a leader who is confident, polished and has had experience working with the grass roots groups.
I give 4 Deaf debaters in the video an A+ for their professionalism and knowledge on where the presidential candidates stand on issues such as ADA.
October 19th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
The debate was clear and showed many details that
deaf people need to know. It made me more aware of
civil rights and current economy.
Thank you all for sharing perspectives with us.
October 19th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I will be always stand behind Obama!
October 20th, 2008 at 12:48 am
I am a Republican and favor Obama for President. I believe he will have some Republicans work for him when he is elected with no questions. One of them will be Powell. He has dreams for the US. Go elect Obama for President.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:02 am
It is great to watch the video. I really appreciated that very much. Unforunately, I just can’t trust Obama due to his very shorty days in his senate term. Mccain does have long term which show more expereince. I personaly perfer the candiates for the president who is in the long term in the gorverments. The longer term show more time and work with people. The short term tends seek the power than the people.
You guys need to think about that.
October 20th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Robert Traina and Michael Clegg,
I wanted to say it is very refreshing to see fellow Republicans in liberal Maryland. I applaud you for your fantastic debate. I felt that the debate was typically and sneakily titled in the favor of Democrats (asking regular guys to debate a lawyer and questions pertaining mostly minorities’ concerns – Democrats’ forte). However, I noticed that you are a strong advocate of small government position (known as fiscal conservative – low taxes and balanced budget). The Republican Party in the 80 & 90’s were primarily “Reagan Conservative” – a threefold alliance of fiscal & moral conservatives and national defense. In 2000, George W. Bush changed the party’s direction into “Compassionate Conservative’ that is twofold: moral conservative and national defense. To defend McCain in a debate, it would do well to study either Reagan or Compassionate conservative. If there is a next debate, I hope that they will use you again.
For fellow Republicans, I recently made up a vlog about Media’s reporting of Sarah Palin. http://www.hvbdc.com/Vlogs/events.html Scroll until the last vlog on the webpage.

October 20th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I think this is very nice and refreshing; I enjoyed it immensely. I am sorry to see it wasn’t CCed or transcripted for the thousands of dead and HoH folks who aren’t up to speed on ASL.
Can it still be done? Surely, between the NAD and DN, there must be someone who can spend a couple of hours doing this.
October 20th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
IT is hard to take the man with a cap seriously. why cant he dress appropriately? gobama!!!
October 20th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Maybe it is too late but…
this should be on You Tube with voice translation!!!
The whole world will see that the Deaf Community do have the same concerns and the panelist have the same ideology of why of who we should vote.
I thank DeafNation for doing this and they could be the “media” to the world about the Deaf Community’s concerns that is no different from the others in America.
Now, I have a question for DeafNation, will you do the same for the debates of how we should work on deaf babies’ need of cognitive development skills at start to learn how to learn, oral only method or bilingual method for all deaf babies and children in schools.
I really believe that DeafNation can do it!
Bilingually yours

Hello, I listened what they said that Obama supports to Second Amendment. Well,I do not believe them because I felt that it is not true. Please check on Obama’s FACT background that he is against the Second Amendment. Obama voted to allow the prosecution of citizens who use a firearms for self-defense in the home. (Illinois Senate,S.B.2165. 3/25/2004 (they vetoed it. whew!) You will see info on websites that Obama actually hates the Second Amendment! McCain might have failed to get an interpter but Obama is worse because he is going to destory the Second Amendment! it is very serious for americans because we follow the amendments. if we lose the second amendment then they can destory other amendments in the future and we will lose freedom and the Gov’t will control on us for good! (Unless we make war to restore the amendments) that is why, I stand it up and don’t let anybody change or delete any of the amendment. I am the NRA! I am voting McCain!

Congratulations and thank you to NAD and DeafNation! This is truly an idea whose time has come. It was so refreshing to see a serious discussion of the candidates in American Sign Language, with attention to issues relevant to our daily lives.
The participants were well-informed and well-spoken and I learned from watching them. I had a bit of difficulty understanding Robert Traina (unfortunate because he seemed quite eloquent and impassioned, but I think it was his speed and possibly the shirt!) and also Nancy Bloch (due to the angle of filming and the fact she was reading off paper). Because of the importance of understanding the question being asked, I might suggest filming the moderator “head on” in the future or possibly adding the question in text on the screen before the panelists start talking. Those criticisms aside, I found the pace and clarity of the forum overall to be excellent.
I hope that you will consider offering a transcript for those who are deaf blind or would otherwise benefit. I also hope that this is the first of many of this type of program! Again, congratulations for a well thought-out and well-executed idea. This makes me want to renew my membership in the NAD!
October 21st, 2008 at 1:44 am
This forum was somewhat nicely and quite understandable very related to our, primary focusing on deaf and hard of hearing, concerns which remains true for every persons in the nation regardless of their disabilities if any. Both of the candidates has so much to offer themselves with so many proven track for various of issues however, there are several issues on which I disagree with on both sides. We can not have it all but we will have to pick one unfortunately so will make things more complicated than they really are.
AS for some of the questions proposed by the NAD/DeafNation during the forum; I feel that it’s very imperative that we take a hard look at our Bill of Rights and all of the amendments to our Constitution. We need to have justices that looks at the Constitution closely and base their decisions off that only not withstanding any emotions. As unrealistic that may be, it’s a difficult job and we only have nine of justices to determine whenever our laws are constitutional or not. I abide by more on the conservative side in the terms of majority of the issues raised by the panel here on the forum.
ADA and other laws relating to our rights are shaky and not strong, both of the candidates knows this well. They are both a wonderful supporter of the ADA and other disability issues notwithstanding such as expansion of accessibility to Broadband internet and more. I however, feel that we need to focus more on our internal structure of the government itself. It has got too big for itself, it’s now posing a risk to us Americans. As the saying go, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Abiding by that saying, it’s better to trim them before it falls in any event if it does, it won’t be as severe as if it were without any trimming of sort. Government itself needs to be pruned from time to time to ensure its health and the welfare of us Americans.
I would love for us to where the States will run over their own people rather than the government as it’s far more manageable to modify and adapt states to their own people. In this sense, the Federal Gov’t will only have to oversee the states to ensure that they all comply by the Constitution itself. This will ensure that our system are running as smoothly as it should, as a V8 engine runs with just the right amount of lubricants - generating a perfect balance of power and torque that will propel our country forward into power and leadership that it once posses.
Vote McCain.

Pah! This place is to be…. where I can learn more about both sides’ especially where they stand with Deaf/HH issues. We can not close our eyes and say, those issues are not currently important. We have been doing that for so long… Look at history, not America History but Deaf/HH Community, we were “sleeping” through hollow days of PL94-142 Law, AGB’s powerful antics of oral education, ADA (I personally feel it’s more for Hearing Handicapped ppl not Deaf ppl), etc… Look what happen when we wake up? Many Deaf schools closing down, Deaf clubs diminishing, Cochlear Implants and Oral Education are “the talk of the town”. Was it because of them, the upper people at the hill? No, it’s us, Deaf people either we’re ignoring the issues, voted wrong people to take care of us, or not advocating ourselves enough. Remember JFK’s quote “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country” We need to vote right president who WE can work closely with and advocate for our rights. And vice versa, president who take time to look at our issues and work with us. I was undecided until this debate, I am convinced because of this debate, to vote Obama for President because of above reasons. Thank you for making this possible for us, Deaf people, to be more educated virtually!
October 21st, 2008 at 10:52 am
As long as I know that Obama is a Democrat but besides that he is a radical person from backgrounds and he is a “closet” Muslim (who knows?). His policies are too much government and being socialism. Our son-in-law’s mother had a woman neighbor who moved here from France some years ago and said that her reason was moved here because demcracy for she was not happy that French government is socialism. She told my son-in-law’s mother not to vote for Obama for he is a socialist!! If Obama elected President, then our democracy will be gone in the toilet.
October 21st, 2008 at 10:54 am
Vote McCain and Palin!!
October 21st, 2008 at 10:59 am
IT was good , but CNN has more clear explain . I respect Deaf panel but this debates is not enough for like only one time , I wish there are more debates for Deaf Community in ASL. I agreed with JGM and I am very strong vote for Obama because I am tired of same old congress and President Bush’s administration that I don’t see any better since 8 years because I felt that President Bush picked wrong people . Reason for war at Agf/Iq because of oil land, not for terrorism reason. Thanks to all of you bring this debates !
October 21st, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Regarding the resignation McCain did at Gallaudet, it has nothing to do with against someone being Deaf. There are three simple reasons why he had to resign. First of all, speaking of legal perspectives, we cannot close the University or the school, it is against the law. Secondly, not all of Gallaudet students and alumni were on the same page when the protest started unlike the first protest occurred in 1988. Many of them received mixed signals. Not all of them did support this cause. Everyone has their own varied opinions. At last, McCain had to give up all of his social interests before getting into the Republican Presidential Primary.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
I have heard about Obama for the past 2 years. As the President, he’d bring healing to our country. He supports diversities. He attends to our needs.
McCain is known for his hot tempers. He was on Gallaudet’s board and walked out on student protest two years ago. He had “zero” tolerance for students’ rights to protest. How will he handle his anger and major problems here in America and surrounding the world????

October 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 am
Always the same paranoia about Obama being a Muslim. As for too much government, hello, Bush’s government is too big as well. The current government is not the ideal Republican government. The current government helps bank and take their stake and it’s close to socialism, isn’t it?
Besides, under Bush our democracy is ALREADY down as he has abused our law too often.
It’s true that McCain has more experience than Obama but he is under my expectation. If he served long in the Senate, he should have a lot of knowledge of economy but he doesn’t. His expertise is military and war but it’s not our current priority. Obama served as Illinois governor for very short time but he was a Senate for about seven years if I understand. And, who knows how long McCain will live? Palin as President? No, thank you. “I can see Russia from Alaska.” Ridiculous!
October 22nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Thank you, NAD, for providing the D/HH community an opporunity to learn more about the presidential candidates in a very professional manner/ environment.
I agree with Jeff Rosen’s comment about looking at who the person is, per se and not the party they are affiliated with. We need to look closely at the person who will take over the rein for the next four years and what type of plan the next president will bring to the table.
Not only should we look at the candidates who is running for the president but also look at the candidates who is running for vice-president.
Again, thank you NAD and kudos to Liz, Jeff, Richard, and Michael for doing this.
October 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm
The best to make your choice of the candiate of the president is looking their voting records to see their true colors…
What I have see their voting records…I rather to have McCain because I follow the Bibical way.
Over 200 years of America is founded in Biblical way. Unfortunately, it is getting dim on Biblical way. We CAN’T afford to lose our consititution and Biblical way.

Hi Everyone, I am total disagreed with Robert Traina and Michael Clegg. Sen. John McCain has not explain how his Ecominic Plan works not very clear. All he says “I know how to solve *”. That not what I am looking for. While Sen.Barack Obama has explained all the his Ecominic Plans and support for Greens. Sen. John McCain does not support greens at all. He going to build 45 Nuclear Power plants. No way, if he put near my home I am moving way out of USA heading to Hawaii where I feel safe without Nuclear power plants because if it happen during Explosion, it will travel 300 miles radius and killing more than 3 millions people and additional 300 to 800 thousand will be killing by Wind radition and only few will survive from radition. That pretty Dangerous to support Nuclear power plants. No way Jose. I go for Green. my question is, if he is Elected as president will Sen. John McCain Pardon President Bush when he leaves the office? Sure he will, reminding you President Bush has gone above the laws, authority, and Constution laws. he should be jailed for that. No Presidetn, Vice President, Congress of USA, Police officer, Civilian people are not above the law. We all are within the law Even Though, Congress are the lawmaker but still within laws period. I have support Barack Obama from the beginning because He shows alot of Hope and Changes that we need. Not John McCain would ever Change. He will be more of the same as President Bush, Remember John McCain have support Bush 90% of his proposal to become laws. He will be doing favor of Bush for next 4 years which I am not going to see John McCain becoming president because of his Lack of leadership, Mismanagement, Favor of Dereguation rules, becasue of Saving and loans bank has screw up and he got away with it without being served in jail time. He went Above the Law and it will be the same as Bush. I am encourage you to VOTE Barack Obama for Next President of United States of America. I remind you I am White and I am very proud to see him to be the first Black President in history and Barack OBama should be proud too. Let make History come true for Martin Luther King quotes said, ” I have a Dream at Last”. Again. VOTE for Change, VOTE in Believe in him, VOTE Barack Obama for President in history. Make it happen. Go Obama/Biden
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:30 pm
McCain is not that religious as Palin. Many people often say that the Republican party is closer to God than the Democratic party. It’s not true. There are religious Republicans and Democrats, non-religious Democrats and Republicans. Many Republicans use religion as excuse; they want to show their perfectionism but the truth is opposite.
Besides, it’s important to note that religion has no place in politics. Romney had no chance as he is a Mormon. So what! A president governs this country and is not God’s assistant. It’s well-know that state and religion are separate, therefore bible is everybody’s own thing and it doesn’t lose in politics.
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Thanks DeafNation and NAD for providing this video which give deaf community understand better of each candidate’s viewpoint….Nancy, you did a good job as neutral moderator and asked some questions to four individual. (Hand Wave to NB!) I know there are thousand questions to ask four individuals unfortunately time wasn’t enough.
I am independent and tend to vote at either candidates for many years. I voted President Reagan but not Elder Bush and Young Bush they messed up USA which was not like President Reagan.
Anyway I want to ask Robert Traina directly, you switched from Democrat to Republican. I respect you but I disagree with your point about a few issues. You mentioned that subprime was created by President Clinton but some GOP were in favor this. And you have not mentioned “Deregulation” law which was created by Phil Gramm, Texas GOP senator in 1999. In fact I hate “Deregulation” law because it caused the middle class in chaos while the rich were comfort with their life. I know many GOP senator and House of Reps won’t admit that they made a big mistaken to vote this deregulation law. McCain was one of them to support it. McCain were avoiding in discuss about today’s economy. Today according to news that McCain mentioned that he has to keep distance from President Bush and blame him. TOO LATE TO BLAME.
Sorry, I will not vote McCain and Palin. Time for me to vote Obama and Biden.
October 24th, 2008 at 12:58 am
McCain prefers to lose the votes, rather than to lose the war. He refuses to give up. That shows he has a true characteristic maverickness. Not even the Engergic Bunny could equates to his! No one ( the enemy of our Country ) could dare to test him, if McCain becomes the 44th wartime president. They know he could really RAISE CAIN, if they are not too careful with him. Inspite of his so-called vunerable age in the untrusting youngsters’ eyes, like ours’, he could survive, outlive most of us, all combined. Who knows? He would be the wartime type to win the W.W.III. That wouldn’t be that so surprising.

For your information, the subject of separation state and church is not literally written…even if you guys look up in the contitution and the articles of law and you will see that it never exist…not even in our consitituion. Not even one word of that subject in our consitution. None at all! It simply came from Thomas Jefferson’s personal letter to Russia. So, it does not apply to USA. This personal letter of Thomas Jefferson became a big issue across in our courts even thought it is not exist in the our law…they use it to keep the churches out of the states.
Therefore, Bible should be included in the politics. In fact, there are alot of instructed about politics in the Holy Bible.
October 25th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Thank you Nancy!
October 25th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
In response to JB on mixing religion and politics. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? Hasn’t past and current world affairs taught you that religion and politics don’t mix?
Religion has no place in government and government has no place in religion as it should be.
Our 1st Amendment says:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of RELIGION, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Now the fact it doesn’t elaborate is because it can’t get more direct than that. That reflects the wisdom of our Founding Fathers because they profoundly understood that if you ask 100 people what or who God is, they will get 100 different answers and that would be the end of freedom! Interesting enough (actually, it’s tragic), there are over 200 different religions in the world which claim theirs as the one and true religion and all others are false or satan-related because their Bible(or significant others) tells them so. Most governments are theocratic and practice oppressive governance. Most people live in fear and sadness under these theocratic governments.
Christian-talabanizing our Constitution will always be the wrong direction for our country.
Our government is one of the very few which seperates religion from government and has become the oldest successful government in the world today! We still are held up high in respect and still remain the beacon for freedom in the world. The day religion is allowed to play politics and vice versa is the day our freedoms start diminishing. Secularism properly applied is the safeguard for our Constitution to protect all freedoms for all good people.
In the business of religion, it’s God’s responsibility in his Church with his flock. In the business of governance, it’s our American government’s responsibility with her tax-paying, law-abiding citizens in our country.
Mixing politics with religion, what an insane idea!
October 25th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
You are so good gave your viewpoints with the prestidential candidates of discussed. You are helpful make me to think about vote for select one for President also some of I votes of Rep. of House and Senator would be help to work as team in the future of American keep the our good dream!
October 26th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Thank you for your debate that I enjoy to watch so much. So I still support McCain. Why? Because when I was young, I always supported the Democrat, but now I am older, I support the Republican. I wish that I could explain why I support the Republician because I have too many to tell. That’s why I love the history.
October 26th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
First of all, I am very strongly support of Obama. He can make America a better change that we need him as leader that he can make the change. It won’t happen overnight. It take times for him to make the changes if he won to become president. McCain/Palin is wrong that McCain shouldn’t pick Palin as Vice President. If McCain choose different vice president. Suppose something happen to McCain. Is Palin ready to be leader as president? That is tough decision to make to decide who you want to vote.

Yay… finally a commentary by Deaf folks in debate format. Quality filming! You all did a great job, I truly enjoyed it.
Thanks to DeafNation and Nancy as a neutral moderator, bringing out the best from Liz, Jeff, Robert and Michael.
As a Democrat, my vote remain the same, more viewpoint from Deaf Democrats can be found, http://deafdemocrats.wordpress.com
October 27th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
this is great! I applaud the effort to be respectful and nuetral. This is quite helpful but as I watched the debate and I have found so many things that are misunderstood or misinterpreted by the Obama voters. I’m not here to argue but I plead you to be open mind and get the fact. Obama’s tax plan will guaranteed hurt us economically and take away our jobs (not just deaf people, hearing people as well)…but don’t take my word for it.. you can get the fact yourself by going to http://www.cnn.com/factcheck Kindly take the time to get the fact straight before you take their words. They are obviously misunderstanding something or misinterpreting it into their own view to justify their passions or beliefs. I do not believe Obama is the right man for the U.S. I can practically see our government crumbling after Obama becomes the President. We do not want to regret our choice in the votes.

Thank you for showing us the deaf debate. Both side are doing great to give their viewpoints of Obama and McCain. McCain is right choice for president. He will make america strong for fighting against terrorist, keep taxes low. For Obama, he will raise taxes on payroll, capital gains and return on Inheritence tax back. We dont want that..I encourage everyone to vote whoever they vote for on Nov 4th. We are glad that America is strong demoracy country!!! GO vote on Nov 4th!!!
October 27th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Excellent debate. The arguments made by Jeff Rosen and Liz Stone were well presented and supported by facts. Folks, Barack Obama understands civil rights and will continue to support the equality and preservation of Deaf culture and rights. He will appoint supreme court judges and federal judges who will uphold the ADA. He will work to ensure health care for all and keep jobs from being sent to other countries. He will give tax breaks to companies that keep jobs in the U.S. He will get us out of this expensive war and put regulation back on banks and Wall Street so our economy gets right again. Every American earning below $250,000 a year will DO BETTER under Barack Obama’s plan. He is not a socialist, he is one of the brightest people we have had run for office in a long time. We will get into a better relationship with the rest of the world. One thing I don’t agree with Obama about is his position on gun rights, I think we need gun control in the U.S. But the statement in the debate that Obama will take away gun owners rights is not correct. Obama will support Americans’ rights to own guns. He will let you keep your guns…no worry. See his position on the issues important to you at his website and then vote Obama. http://www.barackobama.com Obama has interpreters at all his events. He also has captioning on his website. Where is the captioning on McCain’s website? Where are McCain’s interpreters? Deaf rights will protected in an Obama Biden White House. VOTE OBAMA 2008
October 27th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I want to thank DeafNation and NAD for allowing me to see two sides of the story here. I have kept an open mind throughout this whole process and it still has not changed my mind. I am still going to be voting for McCain.
There are some issues commented by Liz Stone and Jeff Rosen that concern me. You’re concern about McCain taking away Vocational Rehabilition (VR). Yes, I do agree we need that program but I don’t think we need to be giving everything. For example, continuing education, devices to assist the deaf and payment for free services such as interent to access your VP services. Those things are things of luxury and not needed. If your income falls in the POOR class category - I don’t mind using my tax money for this. I believe the middle class people can pay for their services on their own. I have seen hearing people without these services. They WORKED for it. It wasn’t a free handout. When they graduated, they had a college debt to pay and I feel that the deaf people should go through the same thing. There’s no such thing as a free handout. Another thing, I understand about people’s rights. They have a right to have abortion, carry guns and etc. If people have a right to have abortion but people should be able to kill other people and suffer no penalty for it. As for a concealed weapon, illegal firearms are being smuggled into this country everyday. Illegal drugs are being smuggled in as well. Hmm, should all the bad guys get the power? Nah, I think as a citizen of this country I should have the right to bear arms to protect myself at any given time.
Now for my own personal opinion, our country is in debt, it’s time that we, the patriot citizens, make a sacrifice of the luxury things we want to help our nation pay its debt back to other countries we have borrowed from. I am hearing/seeing people say we all want to taste that ‘American Dream’. Clinton and his backers on this plan to allow it possible for every person to be able to own a home. People who really couldn’t afford to get a home or had bad credit got a home! This is what is causing our national crisis. This is why our stock market is plummeting. It’s happening in the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush era because they have been fixing the mess the President before them made. Look at the timeline of events before you start pointing fingers. I need to say this, there is no such thing as a FREE American dream. You want it? Work for it, it’s not a handout.
Now about McCain getting angry and making mistakes. He’s entitle to an opinion. He’s passionated about it. Do you want him to be a zombie? A person that shows no expression at all? How many of you have gotten angry and got over it? How many of you have made mistakes, said opps and moved on? Are you going to dwell on the past or move on?
Now on the issue of interpreters. This issue is getting a bit tiresome. When you show up to the hospital, doctor’s office or/and a job interview, do you by miracle expect the interpreter to pop up? Or are you going to call ahead and find out if there will be one there? A friend of mine, who is a very strong McCain supporter, went to a rally and she wasn’t sure if there will be an interpreter there. So she CALLED and found out. She was told that they will have one there for her. When a deaf and blind person shows up to a Obama rally, do you think she/he understands what’s going on? Or is she/he going to call in advance and ask for an interpreter? Come on! You’re grown adults and I am sure you can take some responsiblity. How many of you watch Survivor? I am sure many of you have. Are you a survivor? Or are you a person that needs constant attention?
As for the ADA law, I believe alot of you are abusing it. Just like alot of people are abusing the Constitution. SSI is not necessary. It really is not. You’re deaf. Congratulations. I see a lot of hearing people who are extremely poor and homeless - they aren’t receiving SSI. My mom, who is hearing, decided to receive SSI for me and my two brothers. I never could go to work when I was a teenager because she was receiving SSI. This made me resent her for holding me back and not allowing me to build up good confidence in myself at a young age. SSI for the deaf is an earmark and should be rid of.
As for health care, I am a tax-payer. I am in favor of McCain’s plan on this one. I would rather pay my own insurance with the tax credit I get. This is a sure way that all of us will be able to have insurance, everyone of us. It will save the taxpayer dollars when the government has to foot the bill on those who do not pay. Some of the illegals that come into this country, go to the hospital and get their health taken care of and they leave. Who’s left hanging to pay for the bill? Us, the taxpayers. Surprise. Is this fair?
I leave this to you with this comment: Vote for McCain. You won’t regret it.

Bush has been doing what is best for this country and he has been helping Iraq get set up on their feet again. Alot of the leaders in the Middle East do not like that we are setting up a democracy over there. Thus, it was them, who raise the prices on gas. Purchasing gas from them is still high but Bush is lowering it for us because our country is having an economy crisis. This is all a part of the bail out plan. I would like to add one more statement about what Jeff Rosen said blaming Bush for killing 100,000 civilians in Iraq. Bush and our soliders did not kill 100,000 civilians. It’s the suicide bombers that are killing their own civilians because they do not like change. Don’t forget that the suicide bombers are the ones that are killing our soliders too.
October 29th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
As you know Obama always want to remove the Amendment 2:
Obama wants:
Prosecute people who use guns for self-defense in the home - Yes
Ban all sale of almost all hunting ammunition - Yes
Increase taxes on firearms and ammunition by 500% - Yes
Health Care: He is 100% percent support abortion and partial abortion (full term). He wants the taxpayer to pay for it.
Obama has been in US senate for only 173 days compared to McCain - 23 years. You called Palin less experience for V.P.?
October 29th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

News flash for all Obama voters. Obama is not a Natural Born US Citizen. He might not be able to become president. Please check out this ongoing case that has been filed against him in August. Philip Berg Vs. Barrack Obama. Obama himself admitted that he was not born here in the United States. Check out the latest news from http://www.Obamacrimes.com. This case is being reappeal by Philip Berg to the US Supreme Court.

Myself, an administrator - From my personal experience and working with other administrators - It’s refreshening when having someone NEW bringing in different perspective and new ideas. We get involved in our work so long that we can become “one track” minded at times. It’s good idea to have new administrator at management level every 10 years for the same reason. Now with McCain, he’s been involved in government, as a senator for so long. I am losing my confidence in him because of above reason, I am afraid he’s losing his perspectives when dealing such issues. He’s molded into his ways and it’s hard to break that mold. Like hard to teach old dog new tricks. I am afraid that Sarah Palin as a VP will be the forerunner like it has been happening since the GOP convention. I feel that Mc Cain has faded himself away. SO him being the President with above notes I just mentioned, NO Mc Cain. Sorry.
Obama will bring in new perspective, new energy, new ideas, that’s what we, America need!
October 30th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Dear Two cents worth:
Okay, let’s put your admininstration experience to use. You got elected for Presidency at the White House and you have only spent ‘4 years’ in Congress (take out the days you weren’t there). You have an economy crisis going on and a war going on overseas. How are you going to manage that?
Obama has no experience in foreign policies at all. Let that record speak for itself. Bill Clinton and Biden keep saying this about Obama and it’s making him look very weak. Can you really trust this man to know what’s best for the country?
Now Obama’s been to college and he shows no intelligence whatsoever. He claims that he’s aware of the Constitution rules that you MUST be a natural born US citizen of United States and he’s not. Why in the world is he running for president? It’s showing me that the Constitution, everything this country stands for, is going to be tossed out when he’s elected into office. Beware, you toss out the Constitution, the military will fall apart. The laws of the land will change. This is the change that Obama is shown us.
October 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I finally got around to watching the debate this evening. I must confess that I was in awe of how technology has empowered us Deaf people to be more deeply aware of our voting rights and the perspectives of both of the candidates. Many thanks to NAD and DeafNation to make this possible.
October 31st, 2008 at 4:00 am
I haven’t really hear or seen any of Mc Cain’s plan how he will manage economy crisis. He’s not natural born US citizen either.
Obama no intelligence? Whoa…. Do your homework. President Bush didn’t have any foreign policies experience when he became president. So what makes it allright for him and not for Obama??
October 31st, 2008 at 12:41 pm
IT’s Real Sad to see what our country is going thru..
Only word of advise to those that are VOTING for OBAMA- you people are making a HUGE mistake! The change OBAMA is pushin will COST tax payers 850 billion. The Change OBAMA is talking about is to KILL our Constitution. If you havent figured it out History has proven that Empires fall due to CHANGE. What made AMERICA so great is the Constitution! no matter what party was in office as long as the Constitution was Honored there is Balance. THE CHANGE OBAMA is talking about will LOBSIDE that Balance. experts says it will take 40+ years to repair that mistake… AMERICA will no longer be the Land of the BRAVE and FREED… By that time another Country will over Power weak American s… Keep in mind it was NOT BUSH that took us to war, BUSH asked congress should we go or Not, EVERY PERSON Voted YES, that includes Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton to name a few… Democracts always blame others when things go wrong! How many of us made mistakes and change our way after the lesson?? IF OBAMA wins and the country takes a spin for the WORST dont say WE DID NOT warn you ! OR you didnt know any better! remember you followed a so called “leader” and he promised CHANGE, HE Will bring That CHANGE our LOST of Freedom!!! OUR LOST of a true AMERICA! IN GOD we TRUST will no longer be the truth, it ll be IN ALLAH we Trust! Joe Cool doesn’t Favor any PARTY, but votes the Party that will lead our Country in this differcult times… Joe Cool wants his children to have a future! Please for the sake of America Vote for the Man that Holds the constitution dearly, and PLEDGES to OUR FLAG that BLEEDS red, white, blue…
NOT the MAN that DOESNT pledge to our BELOVED flag!

(Washington, DC) The National Coalition for Disability Rights (NCDR) pushed back today against the McCain-Palin campaign for ridiculing the legal rights of people with disabilities. News reports describe McCain-Palin campaign representative Senator Kit Bond (R-Mo), joining Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin at a rally in Rush Limbaugh’s hometown of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, mocking Presidential candidate Senator Barak Obama for stating that he’s looking to nominate judges who empathize with “the disabled.”
“It’s Halloween and it seems that Sarah Palin’s mask of support for people with “special needs” is slipping. Despite past pandering to people with disabilities, McCain-Palin are actually opposed to vital disability legislation like the Community Choice Act and they want to appoint judges who will further roll back the civil rights protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act,” declared NCDR’s founder and president, Jim Ward.
NPR’s Nina Totenberg has reported that McCain-Palin’s and conservatives’ “most oft-mentioned prospects” for nomination to the Supreme Court include Ohio Judge Jeffrey Sutton. Sutton was opposed by hundreds of disability organizations when he was nominated by President Bush after successfully weakening the ADA with states’ rights arguments. As a sitting judge, he has recently supported the execution of criminals with developmental disabilities and has undermined the Help America Vote Act(HAVA).
Disability rights advocates are further incensed that the McCain-Palin campaign has reframed this civil rights struggle, one founded in concepts of equality, dignity and self-respect, as an issue of “special needs.”
Disability rights advocate, Steve Gold states, “Yes we need support services. Yes we need inclusive education. Yes we need integrated employment. Yes we need equal rights. This not “special”. These needs are based on us, people with disabilities, equal members of our communities. We are not inspirational nor are we “special”. We are PROUD PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES who should push back when anyone describes us as anything but equal members of our communities.”
The National Coalition for Disability Rights is a nonpartisan nonprofit that does not endorse political candidates. We are a coalition of national, state and local disability, civil rights and social justice organizations united to protect and promote the human rights of children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.

I don’t know why people keep saying Obama is not born in the US but he was born in Hawaii!!! Hawaii is not part of US? go to school again.
I’m aware that Obama is relatively new (so is Palin) but everyone has to start somehow. I expect more from McCain as political veteran but he has not proved me he can guide this country either. His only credentials are military and we don’t need more of it. He admitted that he is not expert in economy (how can you guide US during financial crisis if you don’t know how many houses you possess?).
And, Obama is not a Muslim. That he has Muslim friends doesn’t mean he is a Muslim. Aren’t we allowed to have Muslim friends or be friends of other religion group. I think people need stop to be paranoid about it. Bush is a Christian but he has exploited people’s right too much that his actions are not what God favors. We should focus on candidates credentials and not on their religion preference. I still believe that religion has NO place in politics. It’s a private thing.
It’s also alright for Bush government to spend millions of Dollar but not alright for Obama to spend lots of money. What’s the difference? And, Bush government already exploited our Constitutional rights so much that we don’t need more exploitation.
Besides, we are already in a weak position right now - politically and economically and Obama hasn’t been there yet. And we already lost our freedom under Bush’s government since.
I’m not saying I’m in support of Obama but I fear that McCain is McSame and we don’t need four more years. What I worry more than McSame is Palin. She is too extreme in her political view that is equivalent to Bush’s view. What if McCain dies suddenly and Palin becomes our President. “I can see Russia from Alaska” is the most stupid phrase I ever hear.
As for socialism, what the current government does with bailout and supporting economy with taxpayer’s money can be considered socialistic. And no one complained about it but people get panicked about Obama being a socialistic. Remember that politicians tend to say what people LIKE to hear and fear sells. It’s generally known that government should back economy during financial crisis and stay in background during boom.
November 1st, 2008 at 4:10 am
Wow…I don’t know what to say really between those 2 prez right now.. but at mostly side I’m on is on Obama’s side now. But either way whoever vote for president and I would like to see what will happen next to either of them both. My question is can they both FIX economic crisis problem? Taht’s majoir thing in my mind right now though.. so I hope it’s solve in the future so people can be rehire again!
November 1st, 2008 at 8:33 am
Both candidates will have hard time to fix the economy soon as possible. I bet it will take at least two years that we return to old economy level. It takes time and patience and suffer.

I just found out about this great debate! Thank you for doing a great job and it helps to spread some awareness that needing our attention… like for example:

Whoa! I have to disagree with you… I vividly remember it clearly… Sen. McCain did admit he is not an expert in economic policy and promised to pick a vice-president who is an expert in this area to help him out…I don’t know about you but do you really trust Sarah Palin to handle it?

Your ignorance is astounding. Obama was born in Hawaii and the fact that you find this hard to believe shows how backwards you are.
Did you know that John McCain is not a natural born US Citizen? He born in the Panama Canal Zone while his father, a naval officer, was stationed there. Our Constitution’s natural-born requirement mean you MUST born in this country…. Guess who first questioned Senate McCain’s being a natural-born citizen? It is our Constitional scholar and expert Senate Obama that raised this issue. Guess who bought on a Senate floor a non-binding resolution that seeks to put to rest any question about Senate McCain and that murky “natural born Citizen” clause on April 18, 2008. It was Senate Barack Obama of Illinois!
VOTE for Change and I Believe in him, VOTE Barack Obama for President in history. Make it happen. Go Obama/Biden
November 2nd, 2008 at 12:30 am
It is a very interesting debate but I disagree wtih the two McCain supporters. One of them kept digressing the points. What is wrong with him? We need a president to clean up Bush’s mess and bring America back to the way it was before Bush was elected. Also we need a president who supports everyone: people with disabilities, minorities, single moms and dads, gay and lesbians, legal immigrants. Hope Obama wins.
November 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 am
I vote for Obama! Because he will bring great many exciting changes to America. If we vote for McCain, things will stay the same and another 4 years of suffering and crisies. You want that??????
November 2nd, 2008 at 1:06 am
Yea way da go! Snoops has it here too.

I will be support with McCain/Palin. I think that is come to First Country. Force on Nation Security, Energy, And Economic. See What happen on NOV 4.
November 2nd, 2008 at 10:37 pm
From Wikipedia (normally I don’t use Wikipedia as trustful source, but I presume this info is correct):
“John McCain was born in 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, Panama, to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911–1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912).[2] At that time, the Panama Canal was under U.S. control.”
A person is a natural-born U.S. citizen, if s/he is born in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, on other U.S. territory and on U.S. military bases in other countries. If for example, a person is born on a U.S. military base in Germany, s/he is U.S. American. I don’t know what law says it.
That Panama is not in U.S. control anymore doesn’t change the fact that it was in U.S. control. We have to accept it as fact and don’t dispute over it.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
If you vote McCain. the history will repeat as Bushism for next 4 or 8 years. We need new change. If you would notice the history that every 8 to 12 years would be Democrats then Republicans then back to Democrats. So take a hard look at all facts before you go out and make a vote for a right President to lead our country to the right direction that will benefit for our children of future.
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Do we want a man with questionable moral fiber, a man who abandoned his wife who waited and stayed loyal to him, taking care of his two children during his time as POW. His ex-wife got into car accident and got dis-figured and became unattractive, McCain was quick to divorce her and married another woman that is 18 years younger and a heir to brewing fortune a MONTH later.
Is that type of a man who I would like to lead our country? No.
What we need is a moral man, a man who knows what it means to live in lower class and what it means to have tough time with society and money, as well as being a minority.
Obama for President.
November 3rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Hey people,
you keep said i wont vote for obama because he dont have long terms, wait a min, when he becomes senate and he work his ass off to improving people who not work at any jobs then obama focus them to find the jobs and that town success than ever. Remember, he think people before politican. also, he will cut on high class people taxes more than middle class and low class. while Mccain will cost the same price taxes to all the class
November 4th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

obama WON!!!! whew! you all did great job!!
November 17th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
This debate video is so excellent. Those people got many good points that we need to focus on. I believe that it will be great helpful if we all recruit or find someone who is willing to be an activist and the more help we will get. Myself plan to be activist for the deaf in State of Colorado. By the way, I hope Obama really mean it by what promises he made to us, also hope he could fulfill those promises. We need those as much as everyone does. I hope there is more videos of politics and among other to come.
